Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has demanded an immediate reduction in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on milk, rice, wheat and pulses, which came into force on Monday.

“On the one hand, the whole country is struggling with runaway inflation and on the other, the central government has imposed GST on basic commodities, making them more expensive. I demand the removal of the GST imposed on groceries,” the Delhi CM said. He called the decision “ill thought out and arbitrary”.

Speaking to the media after casting his ballot in the presidential election, Mr Kejriwal said he was optimistic that the country could have “a strong and cautious president”.

The Delhi CM also raised the question of the authorization of his visit to Singapore which was allegedly blocked by the Centre.

“Center Blocking Visa”

“The Singapore government invited me to present the Delhi model at the World Cities Summit. I’m an elected chief minister, not a petty criminal. I don’t understand why the Center is blocking my visit to Singapore,” he said.

“Prominent leaders from all over the world will experience the Delhi model at the summit, which will enhance India’s reputation in the international arena. When an ordinary citizen is free to walk out of the country, why not an elected chief minister”, did he declare.

Accusing the Center of “dirty tactics”, Mr Kejriwal said there is “no law or court order that prevents me from presenting at an international forum. I have not committed no felony.”

“Rise above politics”

“When it comes to bringing glory to the country, I think everyone should rise above party politics,” he also said.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Congress also attacked the BJP-run Center for increasing the burden on ordinary people by charging 5% GST on essential items such as rice and dairy products.

Delhi Congress Leader Ch. Anil Kumar said, “All the policy decisions of the Modi government are aimed at harassing the poor and the middle classes in order to enrich the friends of the BJP.” He added that people were already suffering the effects of inflation and unemployment.
